    One of the main challenges of wireless sensor networks is to maintain sensor nodes alive as long as possible, and a lot of efforts are dedicated to enable energy efficient communications. Wake-Up Receivers (WuRs) represent a promising solution for reducing the power consumption of nodes by enabling asynchronous communications. However, to achieve an ultra-low power consumption, WuRs circuits are kept as simple as possible, inducing a low sensitivity and thus a short range communication. As channel coding improves sensitivity, we propose to take advantage of the computing capability of the WuRs to apply a specific channel coding. The novelty resides in applying Minimum Energy coding with an Early Shutdown (MEES) of WuRs based on On-Off Keying (OOK) detectors. Both theoretical derivations and Monte-Carlo simulations show that the proposed coding scheme improves the reliability. Moreover, MEES has been implemented on a non-coherent WuR prototype, and it is shown through experimentation that WuR reliability can be raised up to 22% compared to uncoded communications. Moreover, both the energy consumption and the latency can be significantly decreased thanks to the shutdown mechanism of MEES.},

    abstract = {Many connected devices are expected to be deployed during the next few years. Energy harvesting appears to be a good solution to power these devices but is not a reliable power source due to the time-varying nature of most energy sources. It is possible to harvest energy from multiple energy sources to tackle this problem, thus increasing the amount and the consistency of harvested energy. Additionally, a power management system can be implemented to compute how much energy can be consumed and to allocate this energy to multiple tasks, thus adapting the device quality of service to its energy capabilities. The goal is to maximize the amount of measured and transmitted data while avoiding power failures as much as possible. For this purpose, an industrial sensor node platform was extended with a multi-source energy-harvesting circuit and programmed with a novel energy-allocation system for multi-task devices. In this paper, a multi-source energy-harvesting LoRaWAN node is proposed and optimal energy allocation is proposed when the node runs different sensing tasks. The presented hardware platform was built with off-the-shelf components, and the proposed power management system was implemented on this platform. An experimental validation on a real LoRaWAN network shows that a gain of 51% transmitted messages and 62% executed sensing tasks can be achieved with the multi-source energy-harvesting and power-management system, compared to a single-source system.},

    abstract = {While operating, information processing devices or communication systems may emit unwanted signals (or alter existing ones) through electromagnetic waves, light, sound or power drain. These side-channels can be intercepted by anyone with scientific or technical knowledge and appropriate equipment, leading to a potentially high risk of security breaches. This survey focuses on these emanation side-channels and provides an extensive literature review. To provide an in-depth analysis despite the variety of attacks, we propose to classify the side- channels based on their criticality, their intentionality, the type of attackers, and the physical medium. Illustrative use-cases are presented and serve as a basis to infer individual threats. Particular attention is paid to electromagnetic side-channels which exhibit the highest criticality and have therefore been used in the most recent attacks. The main characteristics of the side- channels revealed by state-of-the-art papers are summarized and recommendations on countermeasures are provided to protect any sensitive equipment.},

    abstract = {This letter proposes a new methodology based on the recently proposed Julia language for efficient software-defined radio (SDR) prototyping. SDRs are immensely popular as they allow to have a flexible approach for sounding, monitoring, or processing radio signals through the use of generic analog components and lot of digital signal processing. As, in this paradigm, most of the processing is done at software levels (i.e., on a CPU), an efficient software methodology has to be envisioned. Right now, most of the existing methods focus on low-level languages (C or C++) for good runtime performance (at the cost of easy prototyping) or high-level languages (such as Python) for flexibility (at the price of runtime performance). In this article, we propose a new methodology based on Julia language that addresses this two-language problem and paves the way for efficient prototyping without giving up runtime performance. To prove the benefits of the proposed approach, a performance benchmark with several optimization levels compares the Julia approach with C++ and Python.},

    abstract = {LoRa is popular for internet of things applications as this communication technology offers both a long range and a low power consumption. However, LoRaWAN, the standard MAC protocol that uses LoRa as physical layer, has the bottleneck of a high downlink latency to achieve energy efficiency. To overcome this drawback we explore the use of wake-up radio combined with LoRa, and propose an adequate MAC protocol that takes profit of both these heterogeneous and complementary technologies. This protocol allows an opportunistic selection of a cluster head that forwards commands from the gateway to the nodes in the same cluster. Furthermore, to achieve self-sustainability, sensor nodes might include an energy harvesting sub-system, for instance to scavenge energy from the light, and their quality of service can be tuned, according to their available energy. To have an effective self-sustaining LoRa system, we propose a new energy manager that allows less fluctuations of the quality of service between days and nights. Latency and energy are modeled in a hybrid manner, i.e., leveraging microbenchmarks on real hardware platforms, to explore the influence of the energy harvesting conditions on the quality of service of this heterogeneous network. It is clearly demonstrated that the cooperation of nodes within a cluster drastically reduces the latency of LoRa base station commands, e.g., by almost 90% compared to traditional LoRa scheme for a 10 nodes cluster.},

    abstract = {Programming heterogeneous multiprocessor architectures combining multiple processor cores and hard- ware accelerators is a real challenge. Computer-aided design and development tools try to reduce the large design space by simplifying hardware-software mapping mechanisms. However, energy consump- tion is not well supported in most of design space exploration methodologies due to the difficulty to estimate energy consumption fast and accurately. To this aim, this paper proposes and validates an explo- ration method for partitioning tilling-based parallel applications on software cores and hardware accel- erators under energy-efficiency constraints. The methodology is based on energy and performance mea- surement of a tiny subset of the design space and an analytical formulation of the performance and en- ergy of an application kernel mapped onto a heterogeneous architecture. This closed-form expression is captured and solved using Mixed Integer Linear Programming, which allows for very fast exploration and results in the best hardware and software partitioning under energy constraint. The approach is validated on two application kernels using a Zynq-based architecture showing more than 12% acceleration speed- up and energy saving compared to standard approaches. Results also show that the most energy-efficient solution is application- and platform-dependent and moreover hardly predictable, which highlights the need for fast exploration tools as in this paper. }

    Emerging Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) represent a real breakthrough for monitoring applications, since they give the possibility to generate and transmit data over dozens of kilometers while consuming few energy. To further increase the autonomy of such wireless systems, the present paper proposes an original methodology to correctly dimension the key elements of an energy autonomous node, namely, the supercapacitor and the battery that mainly give the form factor of the node. Among the LPWAN candidates, LoRa is chosen for real field experiments with a custom wireless platform that proves its energy neutrality over a finite horizon. Different LoRa configurations are explored, leading to adequate dimensioning. As an example, it is shown that, for the same quality of service, the size of the solar panel needed to keep a LoRa node autonomous in the South of France is less than half of the size required in North of France.},

    abstract = {Wireless sensor nodes are traditionally powered by individual batteries, and a significant effort has been devoted to maximizing the lifetime of these devices. However, as the batteries can only store a finite amount of energy, the network is still doomed to die, and changing the batteries is not always possible. A promising solution is to enable each node to harvest energy directly in its environment, using individual energy harvesters. Moreover, novel ultra-low power wake-up receivers, which allow continuous listening of the channel with negligible power consumption, are emerging. These devices enable asynchronous communication, further reducing the power consumption related to communication, which is typically one the most energy-consuming tasks in wireless sensor networks. Energy harvesting and wake-up receivers can be combined to significantly increase the energy efficiency of sensor networks. In this paper, we propose an energy manager for energy harvesting wireless sensor nodes and an asynchronous medium access control protocol, which exploits ultra-low power wake-up receivers. The two components are designed to work together and especially to fit the stringent constraints of wireless sensor nodes. The proposed approach has been implemented on a real hardware platform and tested in the field. Experimental results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach in terms of energy efficiency, power consumption and throughput, which can be up to more than two-times higher compared to traditional schemes.},

To address the time-varying behavior of energy sources, each node embeds an energy manager responsible for dynamically adapting the power consumption of the node in order to maximize the quality of service while avoiding power failures. A novel energy management algorithm based on reinforcement learning, named RLMan, is proposed in this work. By contin- uously exploring the environment, RLMan adapts its energy management policy to time-varying environment, regarding both the harvested energy and the energy consumption of the node. Linear function approximations are used to achieve very low computational and memory footprint, making RLMan suitable for resource-constrained systems such as wireless sensor nodes. Moreover, RLMan only requires the state of charge of the energy storage device to operate, which makes it practical to implement. Exhaustive simulations using real measurements of indoor light and outdoor wind show that RLMan outperforms current state of the art approaches, by enabling almost 70% gain regarding the average packet rate. Moreover, RLMan is more robust to variability of the node energy consumption.},

    abstract = {Wireless sensor and actuator networks play a central role in the Internet of Things, and a lot of effort is devoted to enable energy efficient and low latency communications. In the recent years, low power communications has evolved towards multi-kilometer ranges and low bit-rate approaches such as LoRa\texttrademark. However, the medium access layer protocols rely on the well-known duty-cycling schemes, which require a trade-off between power consumption and latency for message transfer from the gateway to the nodes. Domains such as industrial applications in which sensors and actuators are part of the control loop require predictable latency, as well as low power consumption. Emerging ultra-low-power wake-up receivers enable pure-asynchronous communications, allowing both low latency and low power consumption, but at the cost of a lower sensitivity and lower range than traditional wireless receivers and LoRa\texttrademark. In this work, we propose an energy efficient architecture that combines long-range communication with ultra low-power short-range wake-up receivers to achieve both energy efficient and low latency communication in heterogeneous long-short range networks. A hardware architecture as well as a protocol is proposed to exploit the benefits of these two communication schemes. Experimental measurements and analytical comparisons show that the proposed approach remove the need for a trade-off between power consumption and latency.},

    abstract={Energy harvesting is a key technology to enable long-term wireless sensor network applications. In the case of multi-hop networks, each node both performs measurements to produce data to be sent to a sink, and relays data packets from other nodes. In this letter, we propose a distributed algorithm for computation of fair packet rates for multi-hop energy harvesting wireless sensor networks. The packet rate computation problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem, and using the fast alternating direction method of multipliers, the original problem is decomposed into smaller subproblems that can be solved in parallel. Simulations using real indoor light energy traces show that the algorithm computes high accuracy solutions, even with a low median number of iterations (10 or less). By setting the stop criteria parameter, a compromise can be set between the accuracy of the solution and the number of iterations required.},

An important research issue is the design of efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols, which have an essential role for the reliability, latency, throughput, and energy efficiency of communication, especially as communication is typically one of the most energy consuming tasks. Therefore, analytical models providing a clear understanding of the fundamental limitations of the different MAC schemes, as well as convenient way to investigate their performance and optimize their parameters, are required. In this paper, we propose a generic framework for modeling MAC protocols, which focuses on energy consumption, latency, and reliability. The framework is based on absorbing Markov chains, and can be used to compare different schemes and evaluate new approaches. The different steps required to model a specific MAC using the proposed framework are illustrated through a study case. Moreover, to exemplify how the proposed framework can be used to evaluate new MAC paradigms, evaluation of the novel pure-asynchronous approach, enabled by emerging ultra-low-power wake-up receivers, is done using the proposed framework. Experimental measurements on real hardware were performed to set framework parameters with accurate energy consumption and latency values, to validate the framework, and to support our results.},

    Abstract = {Opportunistic forwarding has emerged as a promising technique to address the problem of unreliable links typical inwireless sensor networks and improve energy efficiency by exploiting multiuser diversity. Timer-based solutions, such as timer-based contention, form promising schemes to allow opportunistic next hop relay selection. However, they can incur significant idle listening and thus reduce the lifetime of the network. To tackle this problem, we propose to exploit emerging wake-up receiver technologies that have the potential to considerably reduce the power consumption of wireless communications. A careful design of MAC protocols is required to efficiently employ these new devices. In this work, we propose Opportunistic Wake-Up MAC (OPWUM), a novel multihop MAC protocol using timer-based contention. It enables the opportunistic selection of the best receiver among its neighboring nodes according to a given metric (e.g., the remaining energy), without requiring any knowledge about them. Moreover, OPWUMexploits emerging wake-up receivers to drastically reduce nodes power consumption. Through analytical study and exhaustive networks simulations, we show the effectiveness of OPWUM compared to the current state-of-the-art protocols using timer-based contention.},

In the outstanding context of SDR, it is important to rapidly implement new waveforms to fulfill such a stringent flexibility paradigm. At the current time, different proposals have defined, through software-based approaches, some efficient methods to prototype SDR waveforms in a processor-based running environment. This paper describes a novel design flow for FPGA-based SDR applications. This flow relies upon high-level synthesis (HLS) principles and leverages the nascent HLS tools. Its entry point is a domain-specific language (DSL) which handles the complexity of programming an FPGA and integrates some SDR features so as to enable automatic waveform control generation from a data frame model. Two waveforms (IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.11a) have been designed and explored via this new methodology, and the results are highlighted in this paper.},

    Abstract = {Cognitive radio has been an active research area in wireless communications over the past 10 years. TV Digital Switch Over resulted in new regulatory regimes, which offer the first large-scale opportunity for cognitive radio and networks. This article considers the most recent regulatory rules for TV White Space opportunistic usage, and proposes technologies to operate in these bands. It addresses techniques to assess channel vacancy by the cognitive radio, focusing on the two incumbent systems of the TV bands, namely TV stations and wireless microphones. Spectrum-sensing performance is discussed under TV White Space regulation parameters. Then, modulation schemes for the opportunistic radio are discussed, showing the limitations of classical multi-carrier techniques and the advantages of filter bank modulations. In particular, the low adjacent band leakage of filter bank is addressed, and its benefit for spectrum pooling is stressed as a means to offer broadband access through channel aggregation.},

    Abstract = {In this paper, we address the architecture of a multi-antenna receiver and we aim at reducing the complexity of the analog front-end. To this end, an innovative architecture is introduced based on code multiplexing. This architecture uses the direct sequence spread spectrum technique in order to multiplex the different antennas contributions through a single In-phase/Quadrature (IQ) demodulator. Simulation and measurement results show that the bit error rate does not increase so much with the multiplexing in both Gaussian and fading environments and with strong radiofrequency (RF) defaults conditions. The complexity evaluation shows that the proposed architecture significantly reduces the chip area and the power consumption of the front-end. }

To this end, we propose an architecture using the double orthogonal translation technique in order to multiplex two signals received on different frequency bands. A study case concerning the simultaneous reception of 802.11 g and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) signals is developed in this article. Theoretical and simulation results show that this type of multiplexing does not significantly influence the evolution of the signal-to-noise ratio of the signals. In the same time a 30% reduction of the power consumption is expected as well as a significant reduction of the complexity. }

    Abstract = {Based on the good time-frequency characteristics of the pulse shaping, it is possible to build a multicarrier modulation that reduces wireless interferences. In this paper, the Wavelet Packet Modulation (WPM) is applied to wireless communications and a new wavelet based multicarrier modulation is proposed which used complex wavelets. Simulations show that WPM outperforms the useful OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) modulation for a transmission with strong narrowband interferences. For a multipath channel transmission, the use of complex wavelet outperforms the use of the real one and outperforms OFDM modulation when the cyclic prefix is not used.},
