Brief biography

Vaibhav Bhatnagar was born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India in 1982. He received his Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech.) in Electronics and Communiation from Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow, India in 2004. Thereafter, he received his Masters of Science (MS) in Electrical Engineering from University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA in May 2007. From 2007 to 2011, He has been a researcher at ICTEAM, University of Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Since December 2011, he is a research engineer at INRIA, Rennes - Bretagne Atlantique and he is working at CAIRN (Energy Efficient Computing ArchItectures with Embedded Reconfigurable Resources), ENSSAT (École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences Appliquées et de Technologie École publique d'ingénieurs), Université de Rennes 1. His area of interests are Digital Signal Processing (DSP) for Wireless Communication, Software Define Radio (SDR), Hardware Implementation of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) networks, Biomedical Engineering, Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN), Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) etc. Recently he is involved with development of flexible software defined radio (SDR) applications e.g. IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee), IEEE 802.11 on FPGA based hardwares such as Nutaq Perseus601x, PowWow. The target is to design a SDR, which can be designed, download, and run on any hardware by using a web-interface.

Current project

  • SNOW stands for Smart Wireless Node a 24 months French project. This project aims to develop a more exploratory designing of software radio nodes suitable for the Future Internet Things (FIT) and to program these nodes from a high level of abstraction. Moreover, the target is to provide an
    experimental facility, a federated and competitive infrastructure with international visibility of broad panel of customers to design and develop a remotely located node. The snow project is part of FIT framework, which is one of 52 winning projects from the first wave of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research’s
    Equipements d’Excellence (Equipex) research grant programme. For the SNOW project, I am part of Inria and working at CAIRN, which is a remote site of Universit´e de Rennes 1. Currently I am involved in developing a flexible SDR for wireless protocols e.g. IEEE 802.15.4, IEEE 802.11 on Perseus 601x platform. FIT’s Cognitive Radio component will foster significant scientific progress by allowing users to design, benchmark, and tune their cognitive radio protocols. It will enable evaluation of different aspects of cognitive radio in a real environment. It will foster developing application-driven research aimed at validating some promising theoretical concepts. The testbed will be located at INSA Lyon (INRIA Socrates team) and developed in collaboration with the Cairn team at INRIA Rennes.

    Previous projects

        • WALIBI is the acronym for Wireless Acquisition and LInk for Body Information. The purpose of this project was the wireless recording of physiological signals through a body area network. The model used in this project was the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the application for long term video EEG in an epilepsy monitoring unit. WALIBI was an inter university project involving at the UCL the Electromagnetic MIcrowave Communication laboratory (EMIC), the Communications and Remote Sensing Laboratory (TELE) and the neurology department of the Cliniques Universitaires de Mont-Godinne, at the ULB the Waves and Signals Department (SOS) and at the FUNDP the computer science faculty (INFO) and the Centre de Recherches Informatique et Droit (CRID). This project was funded by the Région Wallonne. For this project, I was part of DIGICOM group, UCL and my work was robustification of wireless communication around the body.
      • COOPCOM stands for Cooperative and Opportunistic Communications in Wireless Network. Co-operation and opportunism are two concepts that have recently revolutionized the way engineers think about wireless system design. Both have their origin at information theoretic studies and target the maximization of the spectral and power efficiency at the system level. Successful incorporation of these concepts in wireless system standards requires the solution of difficult theoretical and practical problems. For this project, I investigated the spatial diversity for MIMO networks by using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) scheme on USRP hardware specifically for real-time Rayleigh fading environment. I successfully observed the diversity of order 2. The project has already been finished in 2009.

Fall 2006 : He developed a complete DSP lab for 60 masters students to work on DSKC6713 Texas Instrumentation Kit.

Spring 2007: He Assisted Professor during the Bio Signal Processing course and lab

2006-2007 : He was responsible for the Beginners Matlab Sessions, organized each semester

2008-2010: He supervised Masters student during their course project and final projects.

2010-2011: He supervised various Masters thesis at Université catholique de Louvain, LLN.

2011-2012: He finished a teaching assignment for few months at DIT, Dehradun, India. Moreover, he guided some Masters thesis remotely at Indian Institute of Delhi, India.
