Associate Professor in Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence

About Me

I am an associate professor in computer science at Agrocampus Ouest, an engineering school of life and environmental sciences, and member of the IRISA Laboratory in the LACODAM team. My research interest focuses on Artificial Intelligence tools for human decision support. I am particularly involded in agro-environmental applications. I work on the analysis of complex systems using qualitative models (based on timed automata) and more recently with data mining techniques to design models that can provide explanations to end users. Since 2006, I lead the Computer Science Unit in charge of the computer science teaching at Agrocampus Ouest . From 2003 to 2006, I moved to the University of new-Caledonia and worked with the IRD research laboratory in Nouméa.

Data Mining for Decision Support

I am interested in machine learning tools that help humans make better decisions. This includes the interpretability and explainability of machine learning algorithms to make them more understandable and truthfully for humans. One way to deal with interpretability is to try to explain black-box algorithms and to study accuracy and relevance of explainable models for human understanding. Alternative methods consist in designing inherently interpretable models and providing explanations that are faithful to the model behavior. These thechniques are applied in agricultural applications such as the nutrition of individual sow from time series.

Exploration of Qualitative Model for Ecosystems Management

Ongoing research on ecosystem management includes modeling of ecosystems and anthropogenic pressures. My research focuses on using discrete-event systems and model-checking techniques which offer high efficiency and a wide range of exploration. This includes qualitative modeling using timed automata, high-level query patterns in temporal logic and controller synthesis for management strategies. These techniques have been applied to marine ecosystems and grassland based dairy production systems. EcoMata is the toolbox we developed to allow any stakeholder to design and explore his prey-predator ecosystem. PaturMata is a decision support software for cattle pasture management that defines the best operating strategy by reducing fertilizer usage while maintaining the optimal dairy output.

Model-Based Diagnosis

I worked on Model-Based Diagnosis using discrete-event systems. The main issue was to reduce the complexity of the model using decentralized approaches, model-checking techniques or more recently with a logic solver.

PaturMata

Description

PaturMata is a decision support software for cattle pasture management. It takes into consideration the pasture grassland's and the cattle's information of a farm and constructs a set of timed automata based on these information. PaturMata than launches model-checking tool UPPAAL to simulate the pasture process under different operating strategy and provide a summary of the operation, for example herb consumption, dry hay usage and the most important the amount of fertilizer applied. Users can thus choose the best operating strategy based on the result to reduce the fertilizer usage but to maintain the optimal diary output.
